5. You are to do your own Marketing Oppourtunity Analysis of your own.  You can pick any brand of product you would like  to complete the MOA or you can use TIDE COLDWATER

You may need to search the internet to answer the following questions
a) List all of the similar brands that compete with Tide Coldwater laundry detergent (or the brand you picked).
b) Now pick out the INDIRECT competition and write them down.
c). Now write down the DIRECT competition.
d) Now that you have an idea of what competition is out there, does Tide Coldwater (or your product/brand) have 'market potential'? Explain.

Today there will be some reading and questions.  
Start by reading 'Product Mapping' on pgs 191 - 193 in your textbook.  

1. Define Product mapping in your own words.

2.  Look at Figure 5.26 on page 193.  This is an example of a product mapping chart.  You are to create your own chart  (ON THE COMPUTER) using the following Information:

The TOPIC is Snack Foods

Use the same category rating scales:

messy ---------------------------- easy to eat
unhealthy/fattening -------------- healthy/lowfat
boring/traditional ---------------- fun/interesting flavours
expensive ----------------------- inexpensive

The snack foods that you are to put on the chart are:

pudding (chocolate, vanilla, etc)
cut up veggies
fruit (apples, bananas, etc)b
granola bars (and similar products)
cheese snacks (handi snacks, cheese strings etc)

Today we are continuing with product development and we are going to look at some 'strange' new products that are entering the market.  

First, you will need to open the Document "NEW PRODUCTS" on the shared drive (go to the shared drive, open classes, Mr. Southwell, and then open the NEW PRODUCTS document)

Then answer the following question on EACH of the 12 products. (answer question 1-4 twelve times)

1. Do you think that this product will sell (is it feasible)?
2.  Do you think that this product would have a traditional, niche, fad, or seasonal life cycle?
3.  Who would the target market for this product be? (Be specific)
4.  How do you think this product would best be marketed (T.V., Radio. Internet, Infomercials etc)
Answer only once, at the end.

Today we are going to start to look at sport marketing.  You will be getting a project on it starting tomorrow

For today you need to think of a sport, team, and a player that you like (hockey, soccer, basketball, F1, nascar, ping pong, etc)

Start researching your team/player/sport.  In sports, teams are marketed on many levels.  Usually there is a league/association that markets the sport, then the team markets the team as a whole, then the individual players will often have agents to market themselves.  Start to investigate who these people and organizations are.  You will use this information in your projects.

Many large company's operate internationally and a country's GDP could impact the company or change how a product is marketed. Coke is a good example go to the link below.

Today you will be looking at the 2010 Olympics.  You can work on the following questions alone or in pairs.  

The Olympics is essentially a Brand Name.  In order to protect the brand VANOC (Vancouver Olympic Committee) has Trade Marked the words Olympic, Olympics, and 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler.  
        1.  What does Trademark mean?
        2.  What implications does this have for local and large businesses in Vancouver and Whistler?

With each Olympics, they release new mascots (Icons).  These are meant to enhance the games and allow marketers to target children and families.  
        3. What are the 3 (4) icons for the 2010 Olympics?  Include pictures
        4.  Do you think that they will be successful, why or why not?

With each Olympics, they create unique medals.  They have recently revealed the medals for 2010.
        5.  What makes these medals unique?
        6.  Are the medals designed to reflect Canada? How?

Each Olympics the Canadian Athletes get new uniforms.  They were released a while ago to a mixed reaction.  They are designed to be worn by the athletes but also to be sold to the public for profit.  Go on-line and find some pictures of them.  
        7.  Since these are designed to be sold to the public, which target market/ demographic groups are      they trying to sell to?
        8.  Do you think that the design will sell and be a success or a failure, explain?

Hosting the Olympics will be expensive for the province and the tax payer in order to make it worth while we will need to bring in tourist money in from outside the province.  Search on the web to see how the Olympics is being marketed outside British Columbia
        9. Find three different advertising strategies/campaigns that are happening outside of British Columbia         to promote the Olympics.  Explain the campaigns, feel free to use pictures or sample ads.

Going International: Marketing in a Globalizing World. PROJECT

For this project, you may work alone or with a partner. You are to find a product or service that is NOT sold in Canada. You are then responsible for marketing this product in Canada. Keep in mind current consumer trends, people are becoming more concerned about the environment, we are moving into a recession etc. It can be anything as long as it isn’t sold in Canada (It must be legal of course).

Project must include all of the following:

• Picture(s) and description of the product or service
• Advantages of bringing the product to Canada
• Disadvantages of bringing in the product to Canada
• Cultural Challenges
• Who will the target market be
• A slogan for the product
• A jingle for the product
• A list of direct and indirect competition
One of the following (must include the slogan and/or jingle)
        o Two different advertisements that include both print and pictures
        o A 15-30 radio/sound advertisement
        o A 15-30 second T.V. Commercial

You can present your project as a report or in a Powerpoint presentation.
